Sketchup Studio is now a Windows only product. Major changes to Studio are the removal of Sefaria and the inclusion of V-Ray and Trimble Scan Essentials.

What is Scan Essentials?

Trimble Scan Essentials for SketchUp is the most complete point cloud solution for modeling from scan data. This plug-in allows you to easily import point clouds, view them, and model directly on the points during model creation via SketchUp’s native toolbox. Whether you import data from terrestrial scans, mobile mapping, photogrammetry, lidar sensors, or drone captures, the Trimble Scan Essentials plug-in makes your job easy and fast. It’s the essential bridge from reality to completed models.

What is V-Ray 5 for SketchUp?

V-Ray 5 for SketchUp is a photorealistic, physically-based rendering solution that helps designers better visualise their models. Additional features include real-time rendering capabilities with V-Ray Vision, Chaos Cosmos for curated, render-ready 3D content, and access to Chaos Cloud.

What are Chaos Cloud credits?

Chaos Cloud enables users to do fast rendering, by using the cloud. High-quality rendering takes a lot of computation resources, and will run a lot slower with a lower-spec machine. Chaos Cloud credits are used to ‘pay’ for the cloud renderings.

For new SketchUp Studio subscribers, 20 Chaos Cloud credits are included which are valid within the first 90 days of the subscription. The 90-day period begins when the subscription is assigned to an end-user. Cloud credits do not transfer to other users. These credits are not available in a trial.

What’s unique about Scan Essentials compared to other point-cloud data solutions?

What makes this solution unique for SketchUp users in comparison to other point clouds applications such as Undet is that Scan Essentials is:

  • A Trimble integrated solution built by Trimble.
  • Utilizes SketchUp’s native toolbox, converting scan data to models by snapping directly on the point clouds to ensure precision.
  • Supports very large point clouds without slowing down your SketchUp model.
  • Is very intuitive to use with a low barrier to learn.
  • Works with all the universal scanning file formats such as RWP, LAS/ LAZ, TZF, E57, recently added PLY (scanning from mobile devices such as iphone 12 and ipad pro).
  • Has an unique LayOut integration, exporting point cloud to LayOut and 2D documentation.

What's unique about V-Ray 5 for Sketchup compared to other rendering solutions?

V-Ray is the number one photorealistic rendering solution serving 95% of the top architectural firms and in the majority of major VFX productions. V-Ray 5 for SketchUp renders on GPUs for Windows and CPUs on Mac OS, with an additional option to power your renders with cloud rendering via Chaos Cloud. V-Ray 5 now offers both real-time and photo-real rendering solutions offering a complete visualization package for architecture, engineering, and construction professionals. Chaos Cosmos — a high quality and curated render ready content platform is also part of the offering. Users can directly download content into Sketchup, drastically increasing efficiency without impacting performance.

What happens to Sefaira?

Sefaira is no longer offered within a professional Studio subscription. It is available for purchase as a standalone product for team and enterprise-based accounts and will remain available as part of the SketchUp Studio for Higher Education subscription.

In addition, there are a number of additional 3D and collaborative tools available, details of these can be found further down the page. Choose a period of subscription of up to 3 years.

SketchUp Viewer for iOS/Android

SketchUp Viewer for Mobile opens models from 3D Warehouse, Trimble Connect or other online storage apps. View and present models with the familiar orbit, pan, and zoom tools. The viewer also supports scenes, fly-through animations, section planes, layer visibility, X-Ray, and edge and face styles.

AR features enable users to merge 3D models with real-world context; allowing them to reimagine room layouts, evaluate proposals in context or review projects as they would a scale model.

SketchUp Viewers for XR (AR/VR)

Subscribers to SketchUp Studio for Students will have access to our full range of viewers for mixed reality devices: Microsoft HoloLens and Windows Mixed Reality devices; and virtual reality devices: Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. Other XR platforms are in development.

With SketchUp XR Viewers, users can immerse themselves in a project at 1:1 scale to experience, understand or resolve complex spatial dynamics. Cycling through scenes within a model facilitates rapid design decisions and can show construction sequencing. Teams may collaborate via live audio; virtual avatars represent a colleague’s point of view, allowing them to be more easily guided. Tools such as Tape Measure and Entity Info provide insights when needed. On AR devices, alignment with real-world reference points allows digital models to be placed in-situ.

SketchUp for Web

Subscribers to SketchUp Studio for Students are given access to the premium features of SketchUp’s browser-based modeller. Without support for extensions, SketchUp for Web is not for the true power user—but the core modelling tools are available on any device. With Trimble Connect and SketchUp for Web, a user isn’t required to carry their hardware everywhere they go to showcase conceptual designs to a client.

The premium web modeller includes the following features that are not available in SketchUp Free: Export to DWG/DXF/PDF/TIF/3DS/FBX/OBJ/XSI, Outliner, Solid Tools, and custom styles/materials.

Trimble Connect for Business

Trimble Connect is a cloud storage and collaboration platform accessible via desktop, mobile, web and mixed reality devices. It allows users to share and access project information anywhere, with collaboration tools including 3D markup, task assignment and clash checking. Connect supports  Autodesk, Tekla, and SketchUp file formats, plus point clouds, PDF, images, IFC, Microsoft Office files and more for collaboration across disparate teams and functions.

The Trimble Connect app for XR (HoloLens and MagicLeap) allows users to experience models in augmented reality in tabletop mode or at 1:1 scale; models can be aligned with real-world reference points for an immersive experience.

System Requirements

A Trimble account will be created to be used to activate your licence code for the Sketchup Pro 2021 licence. Please let us know immediately after order if you want your Trimble account to use a different e-mail address to the one used to place the order.

Sketchup 2021 requires Windows 10. MacOS is not supported.

Sketchup does not work on tablets such as the iPad Pro as it needs more graphics processing power than most tablets can provide.

Boot Camp, VMWare, and Parallels are not supported environments

PC systems require the following minimum hardware:

  • 500MB of available HDD or SSD space  (SketchUp is unable to support case sensitive hard drives)
